Last night I watched “Stand by me”, an old and beloved film which was produced back in 1986. The film is narrated by an author, Gordie Lachance, known as "The Writer", writing the memoir about his youth. It takes place at Castle Rock, an imaginary city at Oregon during the summer of 1959 and talks Gordie and his other three young classmates who have just finished sixth grade and make an attempt to find Ray Brower, an older boy who has been missing for few days and the police has been unable to find him. They know where to look because one of them, Vern, has overheard his older brother talking about finding the body and the younger boys decide to embark upon a journey to see if they can find it.
At the end of the film, we see Gordie, now being an adult and a father, writing the story in his computer. He sums up the story writing: “''I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12. Jesus does anyone?''
This movie moves me because it is all about friendship and how it can be formed through an adventure. The dialogues between Gordie and his best friend, Chris, as well as the support they give to each other regarding their concerns about the future, are a true demonstration of that. During the journey, the four boys encounter several dangers and difficult situations which bring them closer to each other as they manage to get through them successfully.
If you want to watch a film where the journey is what counts and not the destination, this is the right film for you. And it makes me wonder:
When was the last time anyone had any adventure with his friends?
